That’s “Enough” Out of You, Time Magazine

You’ve probably seen Time’s cover, with the breastfeeding photo.

My only comment on the age of the child: That’s not the path I chose. But I don’t much care if you (or anyone else) chooses it. Do what works for your family. I’ll do what works for mine. And let’s all move along with our lives.

No, my problem is not with the photo. It’s with the headline.

Are You Mom Enough?

How divisive. How judgmental. How unnecessary.

We are all “mom enough.” Whether we use strollers or slings, whether we bedshare or rely on cribs. And, yes, whether we breastfeed or formula-feed. We are all “mom enough.”

And if you don’t believe me, ask your child. Baguette certainly knows.

  1. THANK YOU. I’m so thoroughly sick of how divided moms are against each other. Why can’t we just accept that we all make our own decisions based on what’s best for us and our own families and support each other in that? Why do we have to tear each other down just because we’ve made different choices? You don’t become a better mother by making other mothers feel s***ty about themselves. IT MAKES ME REALLY MAD. (Okay. I’m done. For now.)

    1. I totally agree. What works for you may or may not work for me, and vice-versa, because we’re different people with different families. I’m fine with that. I feel bad for people who can’t be.

  2. The phrase “attachment parenting” is divisive in and of itself. I’m not going to let the media do this to moms. I’m not buying it.

    1. I’m with you. What, my daughter isn’t attached to me because I didn’t use a sling? That’s not what her behavior tells me. We do bits and pieces of different “parenting philosophies” (which itself is a ridiculous phrase, IMO) and make things up. If it works, we keep doing it. If it doesn’t, we don’t. And we’re all fine. I think that’s true of most people.
