So I finally got around to watching The Queen, and here’s my take on it:
Eh?
Sure, I never got the profound love for Princess Diana. Her death was shocking, but the response was something that frankly mystified me. So I was basically watching the movie for the performances. Unfortunately, a lot of them weren’t all that great, due in no small part to the writing. It’s hard to make a one-dimensional character interesting (Prince Philip is a jerk! Cherie Blair is horrible! Prince Charles is a whining baby!).
The only actor who impressed me was Roger Allam, who played Robin Janvrin. I don’t know what his title was, but he answered the phone for the Queen. But there seemed to be a whole person in his portrayal, which is pretty remarkable considering how little he had to do.
So I guess I still don’t get it.
